Jade a 4000 year old vampire sorceress, has been a leader of a powerful Shanghai crime family for millenia, having inherited the position form her father. her competitors over the ages have believed that Jade was a title given to the women who controlled the family in each generation. In the 20th century, Jade came to believe that China had lost, much of its honor and dignity. Now, in an effort to restore honor she is using her supernatural powers to bring all the other Triad families under her control and through them take control of China itself.

Despite the resistance of the Triads, Jade is well on her way to succeeding with those ambitions, but several recent events have gotten in the way. Jade has been dreaming of a time thousands of years ago, and her true love Shiro. Shiro loved her even after she became a vampire, but he was slaughtered by a half dragon, half human sorcerer called Pai Lung also known as The White Dragon. Pai Lung sought the stores of ancient occult, knowledge left to Jade by her father. Though he killed Shiro, Jade defeated the Dragon....or so it seemed. From those volumes of occult knowledge. Jade learned her mastery of sorcery.

Her dreams have made her long for Shiro and feel the loss of her humanity keenly, though it happend so long ago. Her only comfort has come in the presence of her sole confidante, the beautiful mute assassin know as Silence. But those dreams have been monitored by the Kuei, a covert Chinese government operation whose job it was to undermine and destroy the Triads. Now that Jade has supplanted the Triads as a threat she is the Kuei's main target. The mysterious Mr. Ko, director of the Kuei, has become almost obsessed with her and in addition to his agents more obvious actions against Jade, he has launched at least one other effort to destroy her. Thanks to what they have learned from Jade's dreams. Kuei scientists have used the corpse of one of their top operatives to create a cybernetic version of the White Dragon. Jades ancient enemy.

Unbeknownst to anyone, However the Kuei's plumbing of Jade's dreams has had a surprising result. When she originally defeated the White Dragon, it used magick to make sure its essence survived. When Jade drank its blood, it insinuated itself into her mind and has lurked there ever since. However, when the Kuei psychic known only as Dreamer touched the Dragon, it awoke and it looked back into Dreamer's mind, where it saw the cyber dragon created by the Kuei. Pai Lung leaped from Jade's mind into Dreamer's and then from Dreamer into the cyberconstruct. It is not simply a machine anymore, but a sorcerer many millenia old who has his own grudge against Jade.

Meanwhile, Jade met a mysterious man named Chiang, who looked exactly like Shiro her true love, who was killed by the White Dragon thousands of years ago. Silence was suspicious, but Jade found herself drawn to the man. As it turned out Chiang was an agent of the Kuei whose face was reconstructed to look like Shiro....but he has since fallen in love with Jade and confessed all to her and they have vowed to work together.
